Legion is WoW's sixth expansion, released on 30 August 2016. Patch 7.3.5 (16 January 2018) is its final version, and that is exactly what runs on the server. Below is what the expansion contains and the order in which to work through it.
What the story is about
- The Legion invades Azeroth. The Alliance and Horde landing on the Broken Shore ends in a rout.
- The heroes gather the Pillars of Creation across four zones: Azsuna, Val'sharah, Stormheim, Highmountain.
- The fifth zone is Suramar: its campaign leads into the Nighthold, where Gul'dan dies.
- The finale is Argus and the Antorus raid. After the victory Sargeras drives his sword into Azeroth in Silithus.
The main systems
- Artifact weapons. Every specialization has its own, with its own quest and its own trait tree. It does not change for the whole expansion: you pour Artifact Power into it and slot relics.
- Artifact Knowledge rises automatically every week, and alts have compendiums available, so catching up is genuinely doable. Patch 7.3 added the Netherlight Crucible on the Vindicaar: relics gain up to six extra traits.
- Class order halls. A base with a personal campaign, followers and a class mount for finishing it.
- World Quests instead of dailies. They open up with the quest Uniting the Isles at level 110, and the Flight Master's Whistle is handed out along with it.
- Mythic+. A dungeon run against the clock with a keystone: the higher the keystone level, the tougher the enemies, the more affixes and the better the reward. A separate chest comes weekly for your best key.
- Legendary items drop at random from anywhere and change how you play. On 7.3.5 you can wear two at once (a third only as Aman'Thul's Vision, which sits outside the limit), and the item level has been raised to 1000.
- Demon hunter is the new class (night elves and blood elves), starting at level 98. The specializations are Havoc and Vengeance.
- Zone scaling. On 7.3.5 it works across the whole old world, not just the isles: you can play a zone through to the end.
Raids
| Raid | Bosses | Where | Final boss |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Emerald Nightmare | 7 | Val'sharah | Xavius |
| Trial of Valor | 3 | Stormheim | Helya |
| The Nighthold | 10 | Suramar | Gul'dan |
| Tomb of Sargeras | 9 | Broken Shore | Kil'jaeden |
| Antorus, the Burning Throne | 11 | Argus | Argus the Unmaker |
There are four difficulties: Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic and Mythic. On 7.3.5 a fresh character goes straight into Antorus, and the older raids are run for appearances, mounts and the story.
Dungeons and endgame zones
- The starting set: Eye of Azshara, Darkheart Thicket, Neltharion's Lair, Halls of Valor, Vault of the Wardens, Black Rook Hold, Maw of Souls, Assault on Violet Hold, Court of Stars and The Arcway.
- Added by patches: Return to Karazhan (7.1), Cathedral of Eternal Night (7.2), Seat of the Triumvirate (7.3). All of them work in Mythic+.
- Broken Shore (7.2): the Armies of Legionfall constructions, invasions, the entrance to the Tomb of Sargeras, and the reputation needed for flying (Pathfinder).
- Suramar: a campaign spanning many weeks, with The Nightfallen reputation and Ancient Mana. It is mandatory for getting into the Nighthold.
- Argus (7.3): Krokuun, Mac'Aree and the Antoran Wastes, the ship Vindicaar, Invasion Points and the best gear outside of raiding.
Just reached 110 and have no idea what to grab first? Open up World Quests, play through the Suramar story, then head to Argus. That is both the story order and the most rewarding one for gear.
In short
- Legion's final patch is 7.3.5, with a maximum level of 110.
- The key systems: artifacts, class order halls, World Quests, Mythic+, up to three legendaries.
- Five raids, with Antorus and its 11 bosses being the current one.
- Endgame: Argus, Antorus, Mythic+ and the Netherlight Crucible.
